Woman and equality
“Where the
mind is without fear and the head is held high…into that heaven of freedom my
father let my country awake”.
This is what
Rabindra Nath Tagore dreamt of. This is exactly what he wanted India to be like
.We read have this in our textbooks. We’ve quoted the lines in our essays and articles,
but have never thought of fulfilling the great soul’s dream.
India, the
land of hermits and sages, Gandhi and Nehru, seems to have forgotten what these
great people taught-EQUALITY AMONG PEOPLE-irrespective of caste, creed and sex.
Yes, irrespective of sex!
In India, the
fairer sex is still given more importance. Female feticide is still practiced
in our country. we still find people saying, “You are a girl. Why do you need
to work? Get married, have children and settle down!”
The Indian society,
with such a conservative and old-fashioned mindset, makes the life of its
daughters miserable.
Women, exploitation and safety.
Every girl
in India has experienced some form of exploitation.
Schools, colleges
,movie halls ,malls ,bus stands-Nowhere! Nowhere in India, is a woman safe. It
might sound absurd ,but a girl isn’t safe even at home
R.I.P Damini.
The Delhi gang
rape case shook the nation. Thousands of people created pages on facebook for
protesting against the government and tweeted provoking quotes on other social networking
sites. Almost 80% of the population involved itself in ranting. The newspapers
and news channels yelled to highlight the need for stricter rules and a safer
atmosphere for women. Social activists moved heaven and earth to bring a change
in the society.
But ‘demons’ continue to harass the “goddesses”.
Even five year olds are not spared! Hoping for justice and safety is like
crying for the moon for such victims.
CAN THE
SCENARIO CHANGE?
It is
difficult, but not impossible. Every cloud has a silver lining. If every Indian
citizen pays heed to it ,the situation will certainly become better.
Instead of
teaching things like self defense to daughters, why can't we teach some moral
science to our sons? Why can’t we stop treating women as non-entities in the society?
Friends,its
time to gird up the loins!
Thank you!
